The Film
While often compared to The X-Files, the BBC import Torchwood - which is itself a spin-off of the long-running sci-fi favorite Doctor Who - is actually darker, and with even more complex characters. But the same issues of conspiracies, threats from the stars (and time) remain. And with the second season, which presents several "game changing" moments with the key characters, Torchwood remains a cut above the rest. And because it comes from across the pond, it offers a more exotic look than American sci-fi, but more importantly because of the tight 13-episode run, also lacks the filler episodes that bedevil an American TV season. There is a solid mix of tales, and from the first story, which sees the return of team leader, and Lazarus-like Captain Jack Harkness to the final showdown; this is TV science fiction at its very best.
The Picture
The Blu-ray package of Torchwood: The Complete Second Season is probably the best visually that American audiences have seen of this show. While it aired on BBC America last year in standard definition, the 1080i presentation makes it worth seeing all over again, and despite the somber tone this year, the Blu-ray version brings out the deep blacks and highlights the splash of color in costumes and aliens alike. Overall, the picture is comparable with most new HDTV programs, it may not represent the absolute finest hour for Blu-ray but it is certainly a big cut above how it was originally viewed by American audiences.
The Sound
The audio is always very important with quality science fiction, or at least should be, and this goes beyond just loud blasters and roaring spaceships. Since both are essentially missing in this serial, that's not a going concern. But the show does make excellent use of musical cues and notably ambient sounds, both of which are here in all their glory. The result is a rich sound field that should immerse you into these well-crafted tales of other worldly creatures and the supernatural.
The Extras
The truth may be out there, but a reasonably fair share of extras are included. These include outtakes and deleted scenes, as well as 13 mini-episodes of "Torchwood Declassified," which will be of interest to long-time fans. There is also an interesting tying together featurette that looks at "The Life and Deaths of Captain Jack." However, hardcore fans may still desire more.
Final Thoughts
Unlike many sci-fi shows this one has answered many key questions, while still maintaining a solid air of mystery. Sci-fi and horror have in the last decade, become solid staples from the BBC, and while a lot of the shows are just more of the same, Torchwood is something a bit different. While it might not become as legendary as The Prisoner or even Doctor Who, these stories remain enjoyable even with repeated viewings.
