TiVo Premiere and Premiere XL Cable/OTA HDTV DVRs Now Shipping

By Rachel Cericola

It seems that the TiVo Premiere has made its big premiere. According to TiVo, the company is now shipping the TiVo Premiere and TiVo Premiere XL, the two latest products in the company's DVR (digital video recorder) lineup.

The new TiVo Premiere takes our favorite concept of pausing, rewinding and recording live TV, and puts it into a slimmer chassis. Aside from good looks and the ability to watch TV on "your" time, the new high-def box adds in tons of additional entertainment options from partners such as Blockbuster, Amazon, Netflix, and YouTube.

They've also improved the interface, streamlining the entire search process. Part of that search process is a nifty feature that allows you to click on any show or actor, and bring up resumes, cast lists and other programming.

The TiVo Premiere XL holds up to 150 hours of HD or up to 1350 hours of standard-def programming.

One thing they haven't improved on is that the unit still requires a CableCARD. It's old hat for existing TiVo users, but definitely worthy of a mention. The CableCARD format is still limited to one-way communications, and can be problematic to get working reliably with some cable providers.  A new improved "tru2way" CableCARD was launched over a year ago in some markets but is taking a while to catch on.

Currently, the TiVo Premiere DVR supports digital cable, high-definition digital cable, antenna (ATSC) and Verizon FiOS. It features HDMI, component and composite connections, as well as an Ethernet jack and TiVo Wireless N and G Network Adapter support.

The TiVo Premiere comes in two flavors: regular and XL. The TiVo Premiere ($299.99) features 320GB of storage, which can hold 45 hours of HD or 400 hours of standard-def. The TiVo Premiere XL ($499.99) has 1TB of storage for 150 hours of high-def or 1350 of the regular stuff. The XL also throws in THX certification and THX's Optimizer video calibration tool.

TiVo plans to eventually add more features to both boxes, as well as accessories. Some of the previous announced add-ons include a TiVo Phone Line Adapter ($29.99), the aforementioned Wireless N WiFi Adapter (May 2010), and a slide-out QWERTY TiVo remote, which is coming later this year.
