Nobody f-s with the Jesus. Thankfully, Universal has f-ed with The Big Lebowski, announcing a brand new Blu-ray release for the cult classic. The Big Lebowski Limited Edition will debut on Blu-ray on August 16, 2011.
Don't worry; you aren't having an acid flashback. The Dude has done high-def before. Universal did release the film on HD DVD back in 2007. However, this is the first time that The Big Lebowski will be on Blu-ray, and Universal is planning a few surprises.
The single-disc release will come with an all-new 28-page companion book, which includes an interview with Jeff Dowd, the real-life inspiration for The Dude. Other goodies include photos from Jeff Bridges' personal collection (the guy is a real photographer!), a film timeline, trivia, and much more.
Other must-have features for fans include cast and crew interviews in "The Dude's Life" and "The Dude Abides - The Big Lebowski Ten Years Later," scene-specific featurettes, a making-of short and a photo gallery, and a peek at the annual Lebowski Festival.
Universal will also include UCONTROL, as well as picture-in-picture interviews and behind the scenes footage via Scene Companion. There's also a bit on "The Music of The Big Lebowski" and "Mark it Dude," an on-screen counter to keep track of "F-Bombs," "Dudes," and "Dude-isms" in the film. Other features include trivia, BD-Live, a DTS HD Master Audio 5.1 track, and a Digital Copy.
Directed by the always interesting, Oscar-winning Coen brothers, the cult classic stars Bridges as Jeff "The Dude" Lebowski. Other notable cast members include John Goodman, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi, Philip Seymour Hoffman and John Turturro (quite the ensemble!).
According to Universal, this will be a limited release. However, they haven't said how long it will be available or announced the pricing on it yet. Amazon has it listed, but is not currently accepting pre-orders. We are expecting that to change very soon.
