TV Maker VIZIO to Try Its Hand at the PC Market with Sleek New PCs and Laptops

By Rachel Cericola

VIZIO has already conquered the HDTV market. Now the company is gearing up to enter another area of the home -- and the electronics market.

Today, VIZIO announced plans to launch five personal computers this spring. To start, the line will include two desktop computers, two thin + light notebooks and one regular notebook. All five products will include the Windows 7 operating system and 2.1 audio.

While each computer can surely handle the daily workload, email, Facebook, and much more, the company seems to be billing each product as more of an entertainment experience. To help further the company's commitment to entertainment, VIZIO will include the VIZIO Internet Apps (V.I.A.) feature into each of the new computer products. This feature allows users to tap into thousands of movies and TV shows, musical selections, social networking, news, sports, and much more.

"PCs are often associated with productivity and the workplace, routinely lacking the excitement that would be expected with what and how consumers want to use their PCs today -- as an extension of their entertainment experience," said Matt McRae, Chief Technology Officer. "VIZIO wanted to change that. Our new line of VIZIO PCs are truly high quality and consumer focused, delivering enhanced multimedia capabilities while upholding our high standards of performance, style and design."

The desktops will include 24- and 27-inch monitors, while the two laptops have 15.6-inch screens. The thinner notebook will feature a 14-inch screen. Right now, no other specs, prices or release dates have been announced.

"We're excited to see VIZIO enter the PC market and the positive impact they will have on the Windows ecosystem," said Steven Guggenheimer, CVP of the OEM Division for Microsoft. "With their expertise in providing connected entertainment experiences and an innovative go-to-market approach, we look forward to working with VIZIO to bring premium consumer PCs to market."
