When it comes to personal audio, the sound from a mobile phone, tablet or even laptop can be a little flat. One way to enhance the sound experience is the Supertooth Disco 2 portable stereo speaker. The Bluetooth speaker is about the size of a hardcover book (or two), and provides 16 watt RMS audio power that enhances any audio source including movies, music and games.
A second-generation speaker, the Supertooth Disco 2 builds on the success of the first speaker - suggesting Disco isn't quite dead. The original Disco, offered 2.1 sound in a soundbar form factor, featuring an internal subwoofer amplifier with 12 watt RMS of power, along with internal left and right powered amplifiers, each offering 8 watts, bringing the total wattage output of the original Disco to a not too shabby 28 watts. The new Supertooth Disco 2, in its bookcase design offers a total 16 watt RMS output. When paired with another Disco 2 it provides 32 watts RMS output.
The Disco 2, which was introduced at last week's International CTIA Wireless 2012 trade show in New Orleans, offers the promise of being able to deliver the big sounds of the Big Easy in a portable package.
It stands up like a bookshelf speaker yet projects 360 degrees of sound, or when when paired it works as a directional left and right speaker. Buttons on the top of the speaker control the on and off modes, volume, play/pause, and skip forward and back functions. At the base of the speaker there's a charge port, Bluettoth indicator and 3.5 mm stereo line input. Headphones can also connect to the Disco two via Bluetooth A2DP.
An internal NiMH power pack battery supplies power to the Disco 2. A single charge takes roughly three hours and supports four hours at high volume, up to 10 hours at medium volume, and 1,500 hours standby time. The Disco 2 connects to any mobile phone, PC or tablet equipped with the same Bluetooth technology. It operates at the 2.4 GHz frequency, and can work at a range of up to 10 meters from the source device.
The Supertooth Disco 2 is offered in a range of colors. While black is an option, it will be available in red, white, blue, pink, green and yellow in late June. The Disco 2 will hit the floor for $99.
