Sony is waging a battle to sell more copies of the movie Battle: Los Angeles, which is out today on Blu-ray and DVD. The studio has even enlisted WalMart and VUDU to help with the fight.
Today, VUDU announced that WalMart has started selling a digital movie card, which will allow viewers to access Sony's Battle: Los Angeles. Buy the card and you can use the code on the back to stream the action flick to any VUDU-enabled HDTV, Blu-ray player, computer, or other CE device.
"Digital movie cards are a great way for WalMart's millions of movie customers to own and watch digital movies through the VUDU service," said Edward Lichty, VUDU's GM. "By partnering with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment on this exclusive, new movie card, we're transforming a physical purchase into a digital ownership experience, in a way that is easy for customers to understand and access."
This is an exclusive, which is available today for $14.96 at WalMart stores nationwide. Another exclusive: It's only available in standard definition. That's right; despite VUDU's large selection of HD and HDX titles, this card is only good for the standard-def version of the movie.
It may seem like the card adds in a middleman and well... a card. However, it's not unlike Xbox or Wii cards, and makes for a nice gift. It also helps to put digital services into stores.
"Digital movie cards allow us to take digital transactions into high-traffic, brick and mortar retail environments like WalMart, and provide a bridge from the DVD aisle into the digital age," said John Calkins, EVP, global digital and commercial innovation, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. "Our goal is not only to educate off-line consumers about the digital films and services available to them, but also to increase the convenience of buying and gifting digital content."
