Sony, Logitech to Manufacturer Set Top Boxes for Google TV

By Rachel Cericola

Now that Google has unveiled its plans for Google TV, they are going to need someone to make the actual Google TV boxes.

Earlier today, Google announced Google TV, a new service that uses Google Chrome to access thousands of selections around the web. According to details from Google, consumers will type keywords into an on-screen interface. Then, the power of Google will scour the web, as well as other connected devices.

Sony was the first manufacturer to announce a partnership today. This fall, the company will start creating devices that use Google's open-source Android OS platform. Although no products have been formally announced, Sony says they plan to incorporate Google into their own Sony Internet TV platform. That service will launch this fall with a stand-alone TV and a set-top box with an integrated Blu-ray drive.

The company says that they are also exploring both mobile and personal product categories.

Around the same time Sony launches its Internet TV service, Logitech should leak a few more details about their Google TV products. Logitech threw its hat into today's fray by announcing that they will create a set-top box for the service, which will connect to TVs via an HDMI port. Although product details won't come until fall, they did release a photo (see above).

Dish Network also made an announcement earlier saying they plan to offer the Google TV service to their own subscribers starting this fall.
