Last year, the Consumer Electronics Show was all about 3D TV. This year, Sony has found a new way to dazzle the crowd. The company just announced the Crystal LED Display, a new self-emitting display that uses LEDs as the light source -- a lot of them, in fact.
To display the technology, Sony has a 55-inch prototype at this week's show. To deliver the full 1080p HD image, the set uses both quality and quantity. Sony's Crystal LED Display actually uses a unique method to mount ultrafine LEDs in each of the Red-Green-Blue (RGB) color, which equals about 6 million LEDs for full HD.
The RGB LED light source is mounted on the front of the display, which Sony says will improve efficiency. The end result will produce some eye-popping higher contrast in both dark and light room conditions. Sony also says that this set should trump both LCD and plasma in image response, viewing angles, and much more.
While Sony is using a 55-incher to show off Crystal LED Display, the company says that the tech can also do larger screens.
Don't get too excited, though. For now, Sony has no immediate plans to release a Crystal LED Display to the public. However, the company says that they plan to "work conscientiously" to bring the Crystal LED Display to market for both professional to consumer use.
