Sony Elevates the Standard with 3D SXRD Home Theater Projector

By Greg Robinson

2D is just so 2009.

In case you've missed, well, virtually every news story coming out of this week's CEDIA Expo in Atlanta, 3D display products continue to dominate the headlines. And for die hard videophiles, who demand a larger screen than you get from a wall-mounted flat panel, front projection is where it's at. Sony knows this, which is why it has just introduced its first 3D-capable projector, the SXRD-powered VPL-VW90ES.

Sony fans will notice that the VPL-VW90ES represents the first front projector to earn Sony's coveted Elevated Standard (ES) moniker. Like the other members of Sony's high-end ES product line, the VPL-VW90ES has been designed with the custom install and specialty market in mind.

The VPL-VW90ES is built around Silicon X-tal Reflective Display (SXRDTM) technology, Sony's alternative riff on LCD. Capable of outputting up to 1000 ANSI lumens of brightness, Sony's ES projector leverages an improved dynamic iris to deliver a dynamic contrast ratio of 150,000:1.

The high definition projector features Sony's 24p True CinemaTM mode for 1080p/24fps playback of film-based content. To render 3D content - such as Blu-ray 3D movies from Sony's own PS3 console - the VPL-VW90ES makes use of frame sequential 3D technology with active-shutter glasses operating at a high frame rate of 240Hz. The IR transmitter for said glasses is built into the VPL-VW90ES.

Sony will be including two pairs of active shutter glasses with the VPL-VW90ES when it goes on sale in November for $9,999. Online shoppers are out of luck though, as the VPL-VW90ES will only be available through authorized brick and mortar retailers.
