For gamer holdouts still weighing the decision of whether or not to buy Sony's Blu-ray -equipped Playstation 3, Sony just made the decision a little easier. In a bold move that's sure to make the PS3 more accessible to value-minded shoppers, Sony has dropped the price of its 160GB and 320GB PS3 consoles to $249 and $299, respectively.
Offering a brief recap of the PS3's enormous success, Sony Computer Entertainment America President and CEO Jack Tretton had this to say: "As many of you know, it has been nearly five years since the PS3 first came to the U.S. market with its built in Blu-ray player, integrated hard-drive, built-in wireless, and unmatched hi-def gaming. Today, more than 50 million PS3's have been sold worldwide, more than 2,495 Blu-ray titles are available and the PS3's expansive portfolio of games and video content on PlayStation Network exceeds 60,000 titles."
And now the industry's most value packed Blu-ray is even cheaper to own.
In addition to the PS3's constantly-evolving feature set, a laundry list which now includes BD-LIVE compatibility, DTS-HD Master Audio decoding, and support for Blu-ray 3D - none of which were available at the PS3's launch - PS3 owners can also enjoy a host of online features and services such as Netflix, Hulu Plus, Vudu, MLB.TV, NHL Gamecenter, plus free access to Sony's Playstation Network.
