We're starting to see more Ultra HD 4K TVs being released. However, at this week's CEDIA Expo in Denver, Colorado, the big focus is on the big screen. Yes, were finally seeing more options for 4K projectors.
Sony debuted a pair of 4K projectors today, including the entry-level VPL-VW600ES 4K projector, which has an MSRP of $14,999.99. However, the cream of the crop is the newly announced VPL-VW1100ES 4K Home Theater Projector.
The hook on this model isn't just its awesome 4K resolution. Sony is actually planning to bundle this projector with the company's 4K Ultra HD Media Player. Also known as the FMP-X1, this compact device allows users to access, download, store and play back 4K content on any Sony Ultra HD 4K TV. It also includes access to Sony's Video Unlimited 4K service, a feature that's currently exclusive to U.S. customers. The service launched earlier this month, with over 70 full-length native 4K Ultra HD feature films and TV shows, all of which are available for rent or purchase.
Designed specifically for the custom install market, the VPL-VW1100ES delivers four times the resolution of a 1080p HDTV. It also has 2000 ANSI lumens of brightness, Sony's Iris 3 technology, and advanced SXRD panels. These perks allow the projector to deliver screen sizes up to 200 inches diagonally, with a 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast. It also has Sony's Reality Creation picture engine, which is designed to enhance all video content, whether it's HD or a little something from Sony's "Mastered in 4K" Blu-ray collection. It can also support 4K/60p playback, as well as full HD 3D.
Other features include dual triggers, a 2.1x motorized zoom, an expanded lens shift, an RS-232 interface, control over IP, and compatibility with many of the leading home automation systems.
Priced at $27,999.99, the VPL-VW1100ES should reach dealers and installers sometime in October. Sony is also offering a premium activation service package, which includes an in-home service visit, the Sony 4K Ultra HD Media Player, a Sony Xperia Z Tablet for use as a controller, and a new replacement lamp.
