Sony Blu-ray 3D Demo: Giant Meatballs Take New York

By Chris Chiarella

Following recent announcements of titles, release dates, and the availability of the latest 3D home theater gear, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment walked the walk with their upcoming 3D Blu-ray support.  At the Sony Style Store on Madison Avenue in New York City, their first-ever titles were presented eyes-on, utilizing their first generation of Sony 3D BRAVIA displays and Blu-ray players. A special loop of clips from Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, along with Monster House and Open Season, played on a Sony BRAVIA HX800 Series Edge LED Backlit LCD HDTV with 3D, delivered by the Sony BDP-S570 Blu-ray 3D Disc Player with Wi-Fi.

In the store's intimate faux-living room setting, with shutter glasses for all, the presentation began with a recorded introduction by the enthusiastic young directors of Cloudy, Phil Lord and Chris Miller. The reel alternated between 2D and 3D content, and was another outstanding example of the current state of high-definition 3D for the home.

For those of you just not into animation, rumors continue to circulate--neither confirmed nor denied by tight-lipped Sony staffers--that future Sony Pictures movies released theatrically in 3D, including grown-up fare such as Resident Evil: Afterlife hitting September 10, could indeed arrive on Blu-ray 3D Disc day-and-date with all other home entertainment versions.
