We've been hearing about Ultra HD (4K) TVs for a few years. Companies have finally started shipping sets to the consumer, but most are pricey -- and sort of huge. The average Ultra HD TV clocks in around 84 inches. However, what's a 4K fan to do if they don't have room for one of those massive sets?
Think about buying a Samsung. In addition to the recent 85-inch UN85S9, the company has been talking up 55- and 65-inch models under the F9000 Series. Now, it looks like those smaller sizes will start shipping very soon.
Samsung just announced plans to start taking pre-orders for both sets beginning July 21, 2013. That's in less than two weeks! A few weeks later, those orders will start shipping -- sometime in early August.
The hook on these sets is that each one has a 3840-by-2160 image, which is four times the resolution of today's 1080p HDTV. Besides that eye-popping image, both models have the Quadmatic Picture Engine, a four-step process that includes signal analysis, noise minimization, UHD upscaling, and detail enhancement to upconvert SD and HD.
Both models boast better contrast and black levels via Black Local Dimming technology and Micro Dimming Ultimate. The F9000 Series also features 3D options, 2-way 2.2 channels of 70-watt sound, and built-in WiFi.
Having the WiFi and a quad-core processor makes for a better Smart TV experience. Of course, these TVs provide access to all sorts of web-based services, as well as Samsung's brand new Smart Hub interface. That perk includes all of the new dynamic menu panels so users can manage, navigate and search for different types of content. Those panels include "On TV," "Movies & TV Shows," "Music, Photos & Clips," "Social," and "Smart TV Apps."
Also worth noting is that each set is compatible with Samsung's add-on Evolution Kit. That way, users can upgrade the TV and its software in the future, if needed.
"Revolutionizing the home entertainment viewing experience is a hallmark of the Samsung brand," said Joe Stinziano, executive vice president at Samsung Electronics America. "The F9000 series are Evolutionary TVs that will give consumers great peace of mind in their entertainment investment. Now home entertainment lovers will have the opportunity to truly see and enjoy their favorite shows and movies like never before, in crystal-clear ultra high-definition, and in the beautifully designed 55- and 65-inch sizes they demand."
Samsung will start taking orders for the F9000 Series on July 21, with plans to ship sometime in early August. Expect the 55-inch model to be listed with an MSRP of $5499.99, with the 65-inch set priced at $7499.99.
