Today's HDTVs can do so much more than news, sports, reality TV, and the occasional movie. Samsung customers certainly know this, and are taking advantage of all of that extra content that those HDTVs have to offer.
Samsung says that over 5 million applications have been downloaded globally from Samsung Apps. This is the company's on-screen application store, which is designed to deliver on-demand content, games and other useful widgets to web-enabled Samsung HDTVs. Currently, the store offers a total of over 550 different apps, with gaming, video and information apps accounting for 60 percent of the total number of downloads.
"It's no surprise that these applications would be at the top of the lists globally and regionally," said Kang-hyun Kwon, senior VP for Samsung's Media Solution Center. "The TV is a family-based device and people want to lean back and enjoy their time in front of the TV. These apps are the entry point for consumers to discover other experiences on their TV like gaming and social networking as well as the limitless possibilities being created by our third-party developers."
So what does the world want to see? According to the announcement, the most downloaded app is actually YouTube. Other popular apps include Google Maps, AccuWeather, Vimeo, Blockbuster, DailyMotion, and USA Today. Samsung also says that approximately 100,000 apps are downloaded every four days.
"The success of our developers and the rate at which our downloads have increased are evidence that this new medium of apps designed specifically for the television experience is taking hold in the consumer living room," said Kevin Kyungshik Lee, VP of Samsung's Visual Display Business. "These apps are one of the cornerstones of the overall Smart TV experience and they will continue to grow both in number and the diversity of experiences."
Samsung Apps first launched in 2009. They are now available in 120 countries, on all of Samsung's current Smart TVs.
