Samsung Preps to Fix a Glitch in Blu-ray Firmware

By Enid Burns

Nothing's worse than settling down for an evening with your latest Netflix release or Amazon.com- ordered Blu-ray, only to find out the disc won't play on your player. That's what owners of Samsung's BDP-4600, BDP-3600 and BDP-1600 Blu-ray player models have experienced on a few titles since a recent firmware upgrade (version 2.09 to be precise). The software update renders some Blu-ray titles from Warner Home Video and Universal Studios Home Entertainment unable to play, according to an article on engadget.

It's likely the copy protection used by the studios conflicts with the firmware code. Samsung instructed users to revert back to the v2.07 update, however some users are reportedly still having problems. Users can expect a new firmware upgrade in September, according to a post on Yahoo's Gadget Hound blog. The electronics manufacturer has not made it clear when next month the update will become available.

While the models currently having issues are part of Samsung's 2009 offerings, older models had issues with a firmware update this spring that effected playback of several releases including Avatar.
