Samsung Adds 3D TV App, Launches App Contest

By Rachel Cericola

Sick of summer reruns? Pretty soon, it won't matter what's on your channel lineup -- at least not if you own a Samsung HDTV.

Today, the manufacturer made the announcement that the number of Samsung Apps has doubled since they first launched the HDTV-based app store. A few of the latest additions include ESPN's Next Level and the first-ever 3D Video On-Demand app, which allows viewers to get a sneak peek at upcoming 3D releases.

In the five months since the app store launched, the company has managed to create categories where consumers can pick and choose apps based on their interests. The current categories are: video, gaming, social media, sports and kids. Some of the specific apps offered include Twitter, Hulu, Picasa, Netflix, VUDU, Pandora, and many others.

Of course, Samsung is always looking to add a few good apps. To help spark some creativity, they are kicking off the Free the TV Challenge. This contest invites developers to create apps for IPTVs, Blu-ray players and Blu-ray Home Theater Systems. Aside from getting that app out there for all to enjoy, about a half a million in prize money should motivate those creative types.

"We are thrilled that content owners continue to embrace Samsung Apps and that we have doubled the number of applications available to owners of Samsung 2010 connected TVs and Blu-ray devices," said Eric Anderson, Samsung's VP of content and product solutions. "The Free the TV Challenge will continue that momentum by opening up these TVs to even more developers across the US who want to distribute their content on the biggest screen in the home. People want a connected entertainment experience with their devices and we encourage developers to free the TV by bringing new concepts, as well as existing apps from many platforms, to the TV."

Samsung is accepting submissions for the Free the TV Challenge from now through November 11, 2010. Check the contest website for rules, fine print, prizes, and info on how you can vote for your favorite app entered.

Samsung Apps, which are also known as Internet@TV, are available on most of Samsung's 2010 models. Check the Buyers Guides below to find those TVs and get more model information.
