Retail exclusives are all the rage these days as online and brick and mortar retailers attempt to set themselves apart from the competition. And when the new STAR TREK movie comes out on Blu-ray later this month, the only place you'll be able to get a collectible miniature U.S.S. Enterprise (with stand) is on Amazon.com.
The Star Trek Limited Edition Replica Gift Set (Three-Disc + Digital Copy) is an Amazon exclusive, featuring a solid metal model of the U.S.S. Enterprise, crafted directly from the digital models used in the 2009 film, and limited in production to 5,000 units.
You can order one for your favorite Trekkie (or for yourself) here:
Some details on the replica:
The U.S.S. Enterprise Commemorative Replica is modeled directly from the digital effects files used in Star Trek (2009). Hand cast in solid metal, the replica incorporates chrome, textured steel and pewter finishes in order to create a collectible item of unsurpassed detail and elegance. From the Delta Command badge base to the tip of each nacelle, not a drop of plastic was used in the construction of this substantial piece. Each ship is crafted by the artisans of Quantum Mechanix Inc. (QMx), a boutique maker of fine collectibles.
The U.S.S. Enterprise Commemorative Replica was created exclusively for Amazon.com to celebrate the maiden voyage of Starfleet's newest flagship, and is available in a limited edition of only 5,000 ships. Each replica comes with a Certificate of Authenticity, signed by QMx and Industrial Light & Magic's Roger Guyett, Visual Effects Supervisor.
Both editions will include the same 3 discs, with the film presented in full HD 1080p resolution with DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound. On-board you'll find a bevy of bonus features including commentary by J.J. Abrams, the writers and producers, a gag reel, deleted scenes and a digital copy of the film. In all there are over three hours of bonus footage including branching pods that allow for enhanced exploration of the starships, planets, props, costumes and sound of STAR TREK, as well as a Starfleet Vessel Simulator and access to the latest NASA news about real-life space exploration via BD-Live.
The set also features what Paramount calls a "home entertainment first: groundbreaking augmented reality technology." Using a viewer-supplied webcam, a Star Trek visual cue will "morph into a 3D holographic tour of the U.S.S. Enterprise on the screen, providing a unique immersive and interactive experience." Huh? I think this will have to be experienced first-hand to be understood.
