Runco Stands Tall with 3Dimension Series and D-73d 3D Front Projectors

By Greg Robinson

As 3D continues to generate buzz at this week's CEDIA Expo in Atlanta, front projector makers such as Sharp and JVC are making headlines with new and affordable 3D projectors. On the other end of the spectrum we have Runco, one of the industry's most renowned luxury display manufacturers. Runco too is joining the 3D party with the introduction of their 3Dimension Series and D-73d projector. New? Definitely. Affordable? Well, think somewhere between a house and a new car - an expensive new car.

Unlike the majority of 3D display products now coming to market, which rely on "active shutter" glasses - designed to quickly close one eye and then the other in synch with your 3D display's frame rate - Runco has designed a far more sophisticated solution with their new D-73d projector.

Employing Runco's proprietary CSV (Constant Stereoscopic Video) architecture, the D-73d projects separate left eye and right eye high definition video feeds to the same place, then relying on Runco's own passive 3D glasses to filter out the proper feed for each eye. These electronics-free, battery-free glasses eliminate the issues often associated with active shutter technology, namely image studder and frame rate synchronization problems.

Packaged with the D-73d is Runco's Digital High-Definition (DHD) external video processor, equipped with four HDMI 1.4a-compliant digital inputs. The 3Dimension processor package also incorporates RealD's 3D Processing Package, licensed by Runco - an industry first. According to Runco, "the RealD Processing Package includes multiple proprietary technologies for the delivery and display of high-definition 3D content, for a high-quality 3D display experience in the home."

Runco's D-73d will be available in Q4 of this year at your local authorized Runco dealer with an MSRP of $49,995.
