The Film
The buddy comedy comes in all shapes, sizes, colors and IQs. The latter is where Romy and Michele's High School Reunion seems to fall. The title pretty much says it all, but this harmless tale of two half-wits on a quest to impress at their high school reunion gets repeated play on basic cable, spawned a (gasp!) made-for-TV prequel, and has carved out a nice little notch in the chick flick genre.
That TV movie didn't exactly set ratings on fire because Romy and Michele on film were played by Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow (respectively), who were the actresses du jour back when this film made its 1997 release.
The movie plays a little like Clueless the later years. Of course, Romy and Michele don't have Clueless money, but decide to hit up their high-school reunion anyway. Hey, they still have their hotness! Apparently, that's a good thing, because they don't have the common sense to at least come up with a good lie. Instead, the duo tries to trick their former classmates with the occupation of "Post-Its Inventor." From there, the fun goes awry.
Romy and Michele's High School Reunion is the type of flick that doesn't have too many surprises. And that's ok. It's just stupid fun.
The Picture
Don't be turned off by the opening scene; it's noisy, soft and shabby. Once we get a nice close-up of our two main characters, the image improves. Close-ups are the best part of this 1.78:1 transfer, but there are also nice pinks, purples and other girlie colors popping throughout. Like Romy and Michele, this release isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, but it's pretty pleasing overall.
The Sound
The shining star of this Blu-ray is the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track, which kicks off with the pop punch of No Doubt's "Just a Girl." From there, the movie is like one big dance party, with songs from The Smithereens, The Village People, Wang Chung, Kenny Loggins, and countless other blasts from the past blasting through the surrounds. Otherwise, the track is pretty light on the ambience, with strong dialogue staying centered in the front.
The Extras
This section isn't going to win any "most improved" awards. Touchstone has ported over the extras from the DVD. It's a whopping two pieces, with the trailer being almost as long as the production featurette.
Final Thoughts
The Romy and Michele's High School Reunion Blu-ray is listed as a "15th Anniversary Edition," which means that Romy and Michele would be having their 25th reunion this year. We're not saying there should be a sequel, but maybe a better Blu-ray would be in order. It's a fun movie, but unless you count this as one of your favorite chick flicks, there would be little reason to upgrade your old DVD.
