Redbox Celebrates 2 Billionth Rental with Free DVD Movie Rental this Thursday (March 8, 2012)

By Rachel Cericola

Apparently, Redbox is doing quite well, thanks. The company, which is competing with everyone from cable companies to Netflix to your local library for your movie needs, is celebrating a rental milestone.

Redbox says that they have officially rented their 2 billionth disc. The critically acclaimed Ryan Gosling drama, Drive, was rented at the McDonald's in Philomath, Oregon.

There's no word on whether or not the customer got fries with that. However, Redbox customers around the country will get something even better (and less salty). To celebrate the 2 billionth rental, Redbox is offering free movies to customers for one night. This Thursday, March 8, 2012, Redbox customers will be treated to free rentals around the country.

Now, don't just show up at the kiosk expecting freebies. First know that this is a one-time, one-night rental. Secondly, you're going to need the code THANKS2U, which is listed on the Redbox Facebook page. The code is good on one transaction, which also requires a credit card, just in case you decide to keep the title for an extra night (or two).

"We've always known how much America loves easy, affordable entertainment, and today we can prove it two billion times over," said Scott Di Valerio, chief financial officer of Coinstar, Inc. and interim president of Redbox. "Just 18 months ago, we rented our one billionth DVD and we couldn't be more excited to celebrate this remarkable second rental milestone with our customers."

Besides using the code for your own entertainment, Redbox is allowing users to share the promo with friends and family via Facebook.

Valid for March 8 only, the code will be good at the more than 35,400 Redbox kiosks nationwide. If you're looking for a kiosk near you, there is an iPhone an Android app for that. You can also check the Redbox website or text FIND to 727272 (standard text rates apply).

At last peek, Redbox listed some of its top rental selections as Hugo, In Time, Puss in Boots, and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1. For a look at Redbox's top 20 rentals, as well as what you can find at your local kiosk, visit the Redbox website.
