When it comes to the home theater experience, it seems that bigger is still better. A new study by Pacific Media Associates (PMA) says that the number of projectors out there is higher than ever, with almost 10 million units shipping in 2011 alone.
According to PMA, those sales registered a solid double-digit gain in Asia along with single-digit gains in the Americas and EMEA (also known as Europe, Mid-East, Africa). In particular, however, the home theater projector market in the United States and Canada registered record-setting sales during the fourth quarter.
The high-end projector category, which features models with 5000+ lumens, led the way throughout the year. The fourth quarter, however, capped a record year for Digital Cinema projectors with worldwide annual shipments topping 30,000 and cumulative shipments surpassing 70,000. Other models, including those super-bright projectors used in commercial, government, and leisure large venues, also finished the year with strong growth.
The New Era (sub-500 lumens) range represents the smallest category -- often both literally and figuratively. This is the category where you'd find some of the newer pico projectors. Despite the small size, this sector also managed to see some big increases, going from about 1.1 million units in 2010 to more than 1.8 million in 2011.
