The Movie
Fox has repackaged the two-part series finale of their popular weekly action/drama into the "movie" Prison Break: The Final Break. Here, all the good guys have been exonerated and all the bad guys are behind bars, but resentment toward genius jailbreaker with a heart of gold Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) for his long list of misdeeds has inspired the arrest of his new bride Sara (Sarah Wayne Callies). Through barely credible circumstances, she's sent to the same prison as everyone who hates her, before long a large bounty is placed on her head, and the only hope for her survival is for Michael to plan another... well, you know.
The schemes come together fast and fall apart just as quickly, as a story arc that could have backboned and entire season is squeezed into a mere hour and a half. With so many past twists and revelations, accepting the various resolutions here at face value can be difficult, but ultimately The Final Break is a bittersweet coda to four tension-filled years.
The Picture
The 1.78:1 video is generally quite sharp, particularly excellent for network TV fare in HD. Some visible compression artifacts plague the backgrounds, including some significant ringing in places, although the single-layer BD utilized by Fox seems appropriate considering the brief running time and limited bonus material. Very faint grain is also evident but it is minor and in no way problematic.
The Sound
The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 sountrack is spacious and offers high fidelity, with strong bass in the driving musical score and even individual instruments in the rears, where we can also note the sounds of doors opening and clanking shut behind us, and frequent use of ominous echoes. Other multichannel moments include planes flying overhead, steamy action in the ladies' shower, and alarms aplenty. Again, better than what we usually hear on TV-born content.
The Extras
The disc's extras consist of a pair of deleted scenes in high-definition, totaling four minutes, interesting but losable background/motivation for three supporting characters.
Final Thoughts
This is a curious release: The two-parter aired on Fox this past spring as the cap on Season Four, and yet was not included in June's Prison Break 4: The Final Season DVD, so for completists and HD buffs, this Blu-ray is the only game in town.
