Pioneer Enhances iPhone Compatibility, Adds 3-D Support to A/V Receiver Line

By Rachel Cericola

Pioneer wants to take your home theater setup to the next level. Today, the company announced two new receivers, which incorporate a slew of features users will want to add into any A/V mix.

The VSX-520-K and VSX-820-K are both ready for 3D whenever you are. Each one is equipped with HDMI 1.4, which provides more HD connectivity for when you add that Blu-ray 3D spec into your setup.  HD audio will be decoded by the reciver while it happily passes the 3-D video signal through to your display without a hitch.

Aside from future possibilities, both receivers can do plenty for your system right now. Each one cranks 110 watts to each of five channels. If you don't feel like picking through your music collection, you can use the newly added wireless features to transfer audio content from any Bluetooth-enabled device right to the system -- via an optional $99 adapter.

The VSX-820-K also features "Works with iPhone" certification, for use with the iPhone, iPod and iPod touch.

Other features for both include on-board decoding of the latest audio codecs, including DTS-HD Master Audio, Dolby TrueHD and even Dolby ProLogic IIz for the addition of front height channels for an immersive wall of sound.  Note that the use of Dolby PLIIz requires an outboard power amp or powered speakers as it's a pre-amp out only (still impressive given the low price of these two new additions to the line). Also on board you'll find all of Pioneer's proprietary audio enhancement and room calibration technologies.

The big difference between the two units is that the VSX-820-K has an iPhone Control Button and "Works with iPhone" certification, which allows you to play content from an iPhone, iPod and iPod touch. That means you can belt out the one-hit wonders you've compiled into your iPod's music library or stream audio and video from Apple, as well as YouTube and Rhapsody.

The VSX-520-K will retail for $229, with the VSX-820-K coming in at $299. Amazon is currently taking orders for both receivers, with delivery expected sometime this month.
