Philips Shows Newest Blu-ray Players, HTiB with Netflix and More

By Chris Chiarella

This week in New York City, P&F (a subsidiary of the Funai Electric Co., LTD) showcased two new Philips branded Blu-ray players with a host of cutting-edge features. Both the BDP5320 ($199.99) and step-up BDP7320 ($229.99) are BD Profile 2.0, supporting BD-Live and Bonus View, with the added convenience of Wi-Fi internet connectivity via an included dongle. That comes in extra handy with both players providing Video on Demand streaming of premium content from Netflix (available immediately to Netlfix customers on an unlimited plan), plus Blockbuster On Demand and Roxio CinemaNow (both starting this fall). Additionally, vTuner serves up more than 11,000 internet radio stations, right to the Blu-ray player. The decks can also play back AVCHD, DivX, WMA and JPEG photos.

A whole new level of convergence ease is also made possible by Philips Wireless Media Connect technology on the BDP7320. With Philips Wireless Media Connect, a Wi-Fi enabled PC can be viewed and navigated on the television without the need for any cabling between computer and Blu-ray player. Streaming HD video, social networking, online shopping, photos and more can now be displayed on the biggest screen in the house. The Philips BDP7320 is also DLNA-certified to enable file sharing with other DLNA-compatible devices throughout a home network.

The physical design of the players maintains the clean lines of Philips' coordinated Eco TV line, to blend well together into any living room or home theater. These new players deliver 1080p/24 full high definition with Deep Color and xvColor support, as well as 1080p upconversion of standard-def DVDs. Both offer onboard Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD audio processing, while the BDP7320 supplies 7.1-channel analog outputs for use with older non-HDMI A/V receivers. It also includes a 1GB SD card, necessary for BD-Live.

Also from Philips is the HTS3251B Blu-ray Home Theater System ($349.99), offering a cross-section of the above features (Netflix, Deep Color, 1080p/24 with DVD upscaling) along with a 1,000-watt amplifier section and a complement of loudspeakers. The advanced Class D 5.1-channel amp is matched with bass-pipe speakers for a fuller low-end, Dolby Digital and Pro Logic II audio processing and DivX HD playback. All products are currently available.
