Most of you know Peerless from their extensive line of flat panel wall mounts. And while they're still making mounts for every size and shape display, it was their decision to branch out into new territory that piqued our interest at this year's Consumer Electronics Show. Hoping to further simplify the HDTV installation process, Peerless is now offering a wireless HDMI and multimedia transmission kit, which they're calling HD Flow.
Boasting a range of 131 feet with the ability to penetrate walls, ceilings, and floors, Peerless' HD Flow system should conceivably make life a lot simpler for consumers hoping to avoid the hassle of long HDMI cable runs and the need to keep your gear and display in the same vicinity of one another. With the HD Flow, you can easily keep your gear on the other side of the room, or in a closed cabinet in an entirely different room if that's what you'd prefer.
Keeping your source hardware in another room begs the question, "How do I use my remote control if I can't see the gear?" The HD Flow has you covered in this department, thanks to its use of an integrated IR blaster. Simply point your remote at the receiver half of the HD Flow duo (which resides near your TV) and the IR signals are sent back to the transmitter unit which lives near your gear. Connect the three supplied IR emitters to your source components and it's just like they're in the same room with you. Very slick.
Peerless claims the HD Flow can transmit up to 1080p 60Hz video and it does so using the 5GHz band with its own integrated Wi-Fi (802.11n) signal. Content can be streamed to as many as four different HD Flow receiver units, though obviously the purchase of additional receivers would be required in that case. That said, such a scenario provides a highly flexible and easy-to-install video distribution system for your home. And for my fellow backyard theater aficionados, it shoud definitely get those mental gears turning.
The HD Flow Wireless Multimedia Kit sells for $389 (MSRP) and is available now. You can read more about the product and how it works at HDFlow.com.
