Panasonic Opens VIERA Connect HDTV App Platform to Developers

By Rachel Cericola

If you own one of Panasonic's VIERA Connect TVs, you may soon have access to new apps.

The manufacturer just announced the launch of VIERA Connect Developers, a new public web portal. The company is hoping to attract IPTV application developers, who can submit app ideas right through the website. Once an idea makes it through the application process and is approved, it will be made available to the public through the VIERA Connect service.

Panasonic launched VIERA Connect earlier this year. Previously known as VIERA Cast, the new VIERA Connect platform offers everything from VIERA Cast, plus more cloud-based services including third party apps. Because the service is cloud-based, that means there's no need to download apps to the TV or another device.

Update [9/2011] - Apparently Panasonic was able to deliver VIERA Connect to 2010 model year "VIERA Cast" enabled TVs as well.  Owners are reporting that a recent firmware upgrade enabled the full suite of VIERA Connect apps on their TVs.  We have confirmed this on a VT25 Panasonic set from 2010.

By launching the new developer's website, Panasonic is hoping to tap into developer talent from around the globe. Because they are casting such a wide net, there should be a pretty unique end result, which is designed to enhance the TV experience for Panasonic customers.  After all, what would the iPhone be without its apps?  Will VIERA Connect also become home to new killer apps, designed for the big screen?  Time will tell.

Interested developers must register to contribute to the site, as well as pay an annual membership fee. A basic membership is $129, with premium access costing $599 per year. Besides VIERA Connect API access, technical documentation and getting started tutorials, premium members will have access to email support during development and testing and fast track replies and QA.

VIERA Connect is currently available in over 100 countries, offering additional music, video, gaming, social networking, news, and much more to compatible electronic devices. Some of the more well known apps already available on Panasonic's VIERA Connect-enabled TVs include Netflix, Hulu Plus, YouTube, Skype, Facebook, Twitter, and much more.
