We've seen some big HDTVs and we've seen super high resolution TVs. Now one combination of both is coming to crush them all -- literally, perhaps. Cue the fiendish theme music: Panasonic just unveiled a 145-inch Ultra High-Def plasma display in Japan.
This 145-incher is a joint effort with NHK, and features a whopping 8K (7680 x 4320) resolution at 60 frames per second. Dubbed as "Super Hi-Vision" in Japan, the prototype promises 16 times the resolution of a regular HDTV. According to Technology Tell, a new drive system reigns in this big boy, so those high-res images don't flicker.
Sadly, it's not going to be available for home use anytime soon, or maybe ever. Unless you have a basketball court for a living room, you probably won't be able to fit one very comfortably anyway. Instead, Panasonic says it will be marketed to commercial venues, where it will provide entertainment and/or advertising to the masses.
"Even when viewed from 1.6 meters away, this Ultra High Definition display makes you feel as if you're looking at a real scene," said Hideo Toyoda, CTO and managing director of AVC Networks Company at Panasonic. "It doesn't use 3D technology, but the picture is so realistic, you feel truly immersed in the scene."
If you want to get a peek at this giant plasma, it will be on display from May 24 through 27 at NHK Science & Technology Research Laboratories in Tokyo. If you can't make the trip, check out the video (courtesy of DigInfo) below.
