Panasonic Plans 3D Home Theater Projector for 2011

By Rachel Cericola

We can now add Panasonic to the list of manufacturers making 3D-ready home theater projectors, or at least planning to make one. At InfoComm 2011, the company announced that it plans to release its first 3D projector sometime this year.

The unnamed 3D Ready Full HD home theater projector will be a successor to the award-winning PT-AE4000U, currently in use in home theaters around the world including that of our own editor, Chris Boylan.

The PT-AE4000U delivers a unique Lens Memory feature which allows for native 2.35:1 extra wide aspect cinemascope viewing, without the need for an expensive anamorphic lens or motorized sled.  This current model supports 720p, 1080i and 1080p HD playback. Other features include 1600 ANSI lumens of brightness, a 100,000:1 contrast ratio, a powered 2x zoom lens, and Smooth Screen technology for "film-like" images. One other feature is the Split Adjust Mode, which allows viewers to freeze an image and compare it side by side with picture adjustments. Finally, the PT-AE4000U also comes with its own backlit IR wireless remote. The PT-AE4000U is currently available, with an MSRP of $2499.99

While plenty is known about its predecessor, Panasonic really hasn't said much about the upcoming 3D model. We know it's the next link in the company's projector line, and it will add 3D viewing to that winning formula. However, Panasonic has yet to announce any additional information -- including a actual name or model number for the projector product.  We're not even sure if it will be LCD, DLP, or perhaps based on Epson's recently announced LCD-R (Liquid Crystal Display-Reflective) technology.

Despite no name or other specs, Panasonic says that the company will release the new 3D projector this at some point this year. This will be the first 3D projector for the company. However, it will join Panasonic's growing 3D home theater line, which includes 3D TVs, Blu-ray 3D players, and Blu-ray 3D home theater packages.

Panasonic is showing off its entire projector line at InfoComm 2011 in Orlando, Florida. The company will be at the show through Friday, June 17, 2011.
