We're so excited for the summer, we've already busted out the kiddie pool. The excitement is because we have proclaimed this the "summer of 3D." Those 3D TVs are so close, we can almost smell the styrofoam packing peanuts. Now, we seem to be getting one step closer. Panasonic just announced both pricing and availability for its VT25 series of 3D plasma TVs.
The first two of four models will be released in May, with the second two coming in June. All of the new VIERA VT25 plasma HDTV models boast a full HD 3D image, with new, faster screen phosphors (short-stroke). That works in combination with a 600Hz sub-field drive to output alternating imagery at 60 frames per second to each eye.
An Infinite Black Pro Panel promises deep blacks and a claimed 5,000,000:1 native contrast ratio spec. The models also feature ISFccc settings (calibrated with an RS-232C jack) and Studio reference modes for precise reproduction of color and black level standards.
Other features include VIERA Image Viewer, VIERA Link Connectivity with Network Cameras (and other Panasonic gear), THX certification, two USB ports and a PC input. Each model can also tap into Panasonic's own VIERA Cast platform, which features on-demand, on-screen content from Netflix, Amazon Video on Demand, Pandora, YouTube and other partners. A new feature for that includes Skype, which will allow viewers to use that giant screen as a huge video phone (requires optional camera).
Don't be looking for these TVs online however as Panasonic is restricting these 3D TVs to retail sale only, at least at first. Panasonic believes that a successful 3D demo and consumer education will lead to happy 3D TV customers (read: fewer product returns).
The full VT25 model line includes:
In March, Panasonic debuted its first 3D home entertainment system, which included the DMP-BDT300 Blu-ray 3D player and the TC-P50VT20 Full HD 3D TV. That TV, a Best Buy/Magnolia exclusive, offers a lot of the same features as the VT25 series, but is missing the ISFccc and Studio reference modes and comes in a silver bezel versus the brown metallic frame of the VT25s. The VT25 models also include an RS232 port for integration with automation and control systems. The VT20 model will be making its way from the Magnolia store-within-a-store to all Best Buy stores nationwide this summer:
