Olive Media has been making high-end music servers for the past few years and almost everything they have released has earned universal praise from reviewers and consumers alike. The gorgeous one-box units can store a lot of music and the interface has always been quite straight forward. The only issue so far has been the pricing; you can drop a lot of Benjamin Franklins on one of their little boxes. That situation changed this week with the launch of the new 03HD music server for only $999.
The more expensive 04HD (which sounds utterly stellar) can hold more than 6,000 CDs ripped using FLAC (lossless). The 03HD is limited to 1,500 CDs, but we think its safe to assume that for most people that will be adequate. The 03HD's internal HD has to be the region of 500GB in order to hold so many files, and the unit also has a 24-bit/192 kHz DAC on-board which should mean some sweet sounding digital music. There is also a 4" color touchpanel, support for internet radio (over 3,000 stations), and a new free iPhone/iPad app which will allow you to use either device as a remote. The only thing that the 03HD can't do that its more expensive sibling can is wirelessly stream its library to one of Olive Media's media players in another room. Bummer. But the price tag sure is sweet.
