Nurse Jackie: Season Five Blu-ray Review

By Rachel Cericola

The Film

Jackie's back, kids.

Edie Falco is still our favorite pill-popping nurse, in Nurse Jackie: Season Five. With Season Six making its Showtime debut on April 13, the show's latest Blu-ray should give you a chance to catch up. That said, you really shouldn't need that long. Nurse Jackie is the type of show that you can blow right through.

This season finds Jackie still having problems with her work, her suitors, and her sobriety. More specifically, during this season's 10 episodes, Zoe (Merritt Wever) moves out and so do Jackie's kids (Ruby Jerins and Mackenzie Aladjem), Eleanor (Eve Best) moves on, and Coop (Peter Facinelli) moves in on a new resident (Betty Gilpin).

While I'm really sad to see Best demoted to "recurring" status, this season does include several new faces, including Gilpin, Adam Ferrara, and most notably, Morris Chestnut. Bobby Cannavale, one of Season Four's highlights, also manages to pop up in a few episodes.

I watched Nurse Jackie: Season Five in less than 24 hours -- and not because I had to. It's because even after all of these years, it's still an addictive show that's easy and entertaining to watch.

The Picture

Like the show's previous Blu-ray releases, Nurse Jackie: Season Five offers an image that's a little step up from the original TV broadcast. The 1.78:1 image has great colors both indoors and out. Of course, when Jackie leaves work is when that palette looks most impressive. However, All Saints' Hospital does offer a bit of pop, especially when it comes to Dr. Roman's hair and undergarments. The detail is also on par with previous seasons, with close-up shots on faces (most notably Edie Falco's) packing the biggest punch.

The Sound

Lionsgate has given Nurse Jackie yet another DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 mix. Why they continue to do that is puzzling. Seniority, maybe? That said, the show does sound great, especially when it comes to the crystal-clear dialogue. However, this season does offer a lot of moments to fill those many speakers, most notably during Jackie's fender-bender. That's very brief, though. Otherwise, the track keeps pretty busy with the ambient noise, whether from the street, the hospital, or one of the many bars and restaurants featured this season.

The Extras

NurseJackieS5.JPG
Nurse Jackie: Season Five is very similar to other seasons, as far as the extras are concerned -- which is to say, they aren't great. There are four audio commentaries, a piece on this season's new cast members, deleted scenes, and a gag reel. The best of the incredibly short bunch is "A Sober Jackie," a 9-minute recap that talks a bit about the motivation behind the twists and turns of the season.

Final Thoughts

One of the things I love about Nurse Jackie is that you really don't need to be up-to-date on the previous four seasons to know what's going on -- and to enjoy the show. Of course, once you see Nurse Jackie: Season Five, you're going to want to go back and do that. This season is just as entertaining as the others. If you've already started to build a Nurse Jackie Blu-ray collection, this season is a good reason to continue.
