Netflix Streaming Coming to PS3

By Rachel Cericola

If you think you need to upgrade your A/V equipment to start streaming movies and TV shows online from Netflix, well... it depends on whether or not you own a PS3 (PlayStation 3).

It seems that the streaming movie service cannot be stopped. Today, they announced that they would soon stream to PS3 consoles everywhere. That means that almost 9 million more users could receive the streaming service soon -- of course, the will need Netflix accounts in order to do so.

The PS3 is turning out to be quite a little entertainment hub, eh? Aside from games, the unit also provides Blu-ray playback, a photo viewer, web access and downloads from the PlayStationNetwork. Netflix expects the streaming to start within the next month.

"The PlayStation 3 system has always been about more than just gaming, and it will soon be the only platform in the industry to offer consumers such a variety of convenient options for enjoying movies and TV shows," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA). "The PS3 system is the only solution that offers it all."

To get streaming Netflix, you'll need to pay at least $8.99 per month for an "unlimited" plan. This gets you any one DVD at a time with no late fees, but it also gets you all you can eat from the instant streaming menu.

For Netflix streaming on the PS3, at least in its first version, you'll also need to order a free, instant streaming Blu-ray disc from Netflix. Pop in the disc and you can navigate your Netflix Instant Queue using the PS3's controller.  The technology works without any need to upgrade the PS3's software or firmware, taking advantage of the BD-Live feature inherent to Blu-ray Disc.

Netflix subscribers can reserve the free disc now (with free shipping) at netflix.com/ps3. Once it's available, the company says it should arrive at your door within one business day courtesy of Netflix' tried and true distribution system.
