Netflix Streaming Comes to the Nintendo Wii

By Rachel Cericola

Netflix is still determined to take over the world -- or at least your living room. The online movie service just announced more partnerships that would result in new hardware devices from Panasonic, Sharp, Toshiba, and others. Of course, you could just use one that you already own. Today, we got the announcement that Netflix will soon start streaming to the Nintendo Wii.

Aside from a broadband-connected Wii, you would need an unlimited Netflix subscription, which starts at $8.99 a month. Wii owners can go to the Netflix site to reserve a free instant-streaming disc. Once the service goes live, you will receive your disc. Pop it in the console, and use your Wii Remote to navigate through TV and movie choices.

Of course, movies will only be able to stream in standard definition - the Wii console does not support high-def output - but this may be good enough for viewers with smaller TVs or those who are less picky about picture quality.

"Our goal is to offer Netflix members as many ways as possible to watch movies and TV episodes streamed from Netflix right to their TVs and to give non-members more and compelling reasons to consider the service," said Netflix co-founder and CEO Reed Hastings. "Joining forces with Nintendo, which has been so immensely popular with consumers since its introduction, is a very meaningful step in that direction."

That mission could soon be accomplished. Netflix subscribers should be able to stream to the Wii system starting this spring.
