Microsoft created some Apple-style buzz, announcing plans for a secret Monday press event. Almost immediately, the web began buzzing with speculation. Wonder no more, gadget geeks. The beans have been spilled.
This evening, the company announced plans to release the Microsoft Surface. If the name sounds familiar, it's because the first Surface device (now known as PixelSense) was actually released in 2008. However, this new tablet line will come in two models. One will feature an ARM processor and Windows RT, with the other packing a third-generation Intel Core processor and the Windows 8 Pro operating system.
As far as aesthetics, the tablet will have a 10.6-inch high-def touchscreen and both front- and rear-facing cameras -- all in a 9.3mm package that weighs less than 1.5 pounds. The most interesting part of how the tablet looks, however, is actually how it's packaged. The Surface will come with a Touch Cover that flips down to reveal a full keyboard. The actual case uses something called VaporMg (pronounced Vapor-Mag), which includes magnesium that's as thin as a credit card and has a built-in kickstand.
Both models have a few other differences. The RT version will include 32 and 64GB options, with a microSD slot, USB 2.0 port, micro HD video, and 2x2 MIMO antennae connections. The Windows 8 model will come in 64 and 128GB models, with microSDXC, USB 3.0, and a mini DisplayPort video.
"Surface represents a unique vision for the seamless expression of entertainment and creativity," said Microsoft in a press release.
Microsoft says that Surface for Windows RT will release with the general availability of Windows 8, and the Windows 8 Pro model will be available about 90 days later. Unfortunately, that tidbit doesn't narrow down an actual release date. That and pricing have yet to be announced, but both are expected to sell at Microsoft Store locations in the U.S. and select online outlets.
