What makes the Source SE so special? Well other than its obviously unique and elegant look, the Source SE features the latest generation of MartinLogan's CLS Generation 2 Electrostatic Panel. The speaker creates sound via electrostatic charge which vibrates an ultra-low mass PET (polyethylene terathylate) transparent diaphragm, protected by microperforated metal stators. Huh?
Well without getting too deep into the physics, virtually the whole surface of the panel radiates sound creating open, detailed and transparent reproduction of music and movies. It's quite unlike what you hear with traditional dynamic speaker drivers. Instruments, voices and sound effects float in three dimensional space creating a deep and broad soundstage that extends well beyond the boundaries of your room.
The panel is supplemented on the low end by a built-in high-rigidity, high-excursion 8-inch woofer which is able to achieve the low distortion necessary for proper blending with MartinLogan electrostatic panels. The drivers are crossed over using Martin Logan's proprietary Vojtko topology for low distortion and seamless driver integration.
The Source "SE" (Special Edition) is a real wood veneer version of the standard Source loudspeaker. Only the Dark Cherry finish is available at the reduced pricing on Amazon. Black wood (Source SE) and vinyl finish (Source) versions are also available, but for higher prices than the cherry wood SE version. Pricing on Amazon is subject to change at any time and stock is subject to availability. See Amazon site for current pricing and availability.
Also, while the Source SE makes an excellent choice for a classic 2-channel stereo HiFi rig, they work equally well in a multi-channel home theater installation. To do so (without breaking the bank), we'd recommend matching a pair of Source SEs with three or five of Martin Logan's Encore TF LCR speaker so you get similar sonic characteristics from all channels. While the Encore TF is not a true electrostatic speaker, its ATF (Advanced Thin Film) transducer offers similar characteristics to an electrostat but at a much lower price and smaller size.
And while the Source SE can put out some decent bass on its own (its rated frequency response is 42-22,000 Hz +/- 3 dB), you might also consider adding a subwoofer such as the MartinLogan Abyss. This is particularly recommended if you're going to use this in a multi-channel home theater environment and need some real low-end kick.
