Martin Logan 5.1 Home Theater Speaker System Under $2000? No Way?! Way!

By Chris Boylan

At CEDIA Expo 2009, MartinLogan showed off not only a pair of new wireless subwoofers, but also some new speakers that will soon be available at price points previously outside the realm of the high end loudspeaker manufacturer.  The as yet un-named model features a thin film tweeter design that offers an open airy sound similar in many ways to MartinLogan's far more expensive electrostatic speakers.

On live demonstration in MartinLogan's booth, paired with one of the company's new wireless subwoofers, the speakers offered nice dynamics, clear dialog reproduction and a deep soundstage.  The models are expected to be available in a variety of sizes and designs including small and large bookshelf models, at least one center channel, and floorstanding towers. When I asked about bipolar dual tweeter surround models, the company rep simply smiled and neither confirmed nor denied their plans.

MartinLogan's new thin film speakers are expected to be available in a number of different shapes and sizes. Pictured here are a center channel and two small bookshelf speakers.

The tweeter design is similar to an Air Motion Transformer and features a large folded thin film transducer and 80 degree radiating pattern for a wide dispersion pattern.  This means a bigger sweet spot and enjoyable stereo or surround sound from a large portion of the listening room.  The tweeter's design also leads to excellent transient response and high power efficiency so you won't need an overly powerful amplifier or receiver to drive them.

Availability is expected "within six months" and MartinLogan is targeting a price point of around $2,000 for a full blown 5.1 channel system including a powered subwoofer.  Individual speakers will be available ala carte so you can build a 7.1, 9.1, or 9.2 channel system as your listening room and tastes dictate.  Expect to hear more about these new models in the coming months.
