Logitech's Debuts New Harmony 600 and 650 Remotes Under $100

By Rachel Cericola

We've always loved the ease of Logitech's Harmony line. They make remotes so easy, our parents can operate them. OK - maybe not our parents, but most parents.

However, getting so many devices under one controller and making it all pretty and pretty easy doesn't always come cheap. Well, it didn't used to come cheap. Logitech just announced the Harmony 600 and Harmony 650, two new integrated remote controls that cost under $100.

Just like other Harmony remotes, set up is easy through any computer. Just connect via a USB, go to Harmony's website, and download the software. From there, you just enter your various A/V devices. Once you have all of your favorite items input into the remote, you can control items individually or fire up the HDTV, Blu-ray player, receiver and other devices all at the touch of one button, which Logitech calls an "Activity." For example, a "Watch a Movie" activity might fire up your TV, A/V receiver and Blu-ray player, set the TV to the HDMI 1 input and set the remote so that play and pause buttons operate the Blu-ray player while "aspect" controls the TV and Volume up/down controls the receiver (all automatically through the use of the Harmony programming Wizrad).

Logitech's Harmony 650 features a color screen, which lets you see icons for your favorite channels.
Logitech says that each Harmony remote currently supports more than 250,000 home-entertainment devices from more than 5,000 brands. Of course, not all at once, but that database of devices does grow every day.

Both of the new units can replace up to five other remotes. The big difference between the two controllers is that the 650 has a color screen, which looks nice when displaying favorite channel icons. That kind of fancy will cost you $99, while the monochrome screen of the 600 is only $79.

The new Harmony 600 and Harmony 650 will be available sometime this month. In case your remote fingers are getting itchy, Logitech also offers the Harmony 700, which controls six devices and is rechargeable. They also have a very nifty touchscreen in the Harmony One. Those two are available right now.
