CES: Logitech N700 Lapdesk Turns Your Laptop into a Mini Home Theater

By Chris Chiarella

Logitech has a knack for squeezing better-than-the-other-guys sound into unexpected places, and so they have again with their newly announced Speaker Lapdesk N700. The problem that consumers face is that, well, the speakers already inside our laptops suck for the most part, while many portable computers don't even offer hard volume controls. And now with more people using their PC/Mac laptops as multimedia machines in more places than ever, a tricked out lapdesk can be a most welcome add-on.

This is not the lapdesk your mom used for her crosswords in front of the Victrola: The N700 is the top of Logitech's new lapdesk line, the company's first all-in-one laptop accessory with integrated stereo speakers on either side, a built-in cooling fan on top and a wide padded base. The fan quietly distributes unwelcome heat from beneath the laptop, while the ergonomically curved base is extremely comfortable while raising the viewing angle, for more enjoyable computing on the couch, in bed, or even in the car (preferably not while driving).

The pair of two-inch neodymium drivers has been positioned to create an optimal soundfield, drawing their two kickin' watts of power--and deriving the audio data--via the lapdesk's single USB plug-and-play connection, with no special software needed. Dedicated buttons control volume/mute and fan operation. Tipping the scales at about four pounds, the Logitech Speaker Lapdesk N700 will be available next month at a suggested price of $79.99.
