LG Debuts D2000 Glasses-Free 3D Monitor

By Rachel Cericola

Those waiting on glasses-free 3D TVs may soon be rewarded for their patience, well as long as screen size isn't too important. LG just announced plans to release the 20-inch D2000 Glasses-Free 3D Monitor. The company says that this product is the world's first glasses-free 3D TV to use eye-tracking technology, which can deliver a clear 3D image from a variety of viewing angles.

Don't get too excited just yet. We're not too sure whether or not the product will make it to U.S. audiences. Right now, LG has plans to launch the monitor in Korea, under the name DX2000. When it hits other markets, it will go by the name D2000. The company has yet to announce exactly what those other markets will be -- and when they will get the product. However, that information is expected to come before the end of this year.

Designed for everything from games to movies to 3D still images, the D2000 has what LG calls "glasses-free parallax barrier 3D technology." A camera sensor attached to the monitor tracks the viewer's eye movement in real-time, and calculates the angle and position of the viewer. LG says that this information is used to deliver the best possible 3D effect without the need for glasses, creating a less encumbered 3D viewing experience.

"With a full line-up of 3D TVs, laptops, projectors and smartphones, LG Electronics is by far and away the industry leader in all things 3D," said Si-hwan Park, VP of LG's monitor division. "LG's position has always been that 3D will and must eventually function without glasses. The D2000 is a look at what the future has in store."

LG says that the D2000 also has a 2D-to-3D conversion feature. Other specs and pricing have not been announced yet.
