Not all "LED TVs" (LED-lit LCD TVs, to be precise) are created equal. To get the biggest performance benefit from LED backlighting, a TV has to have local dimming. Local dimming is a feature whereby the full array of LED lights is broken up into separate sectors or zones, each of which is controlled independently by the TV's processor, selectively turning on and off the backlight as the needs of the picture dictate. What does all this mean in English? It means that local dimming capability can give an LCD TV much more precise control over black levels (contrast) in multiple areas of the screen, improving contrast and black level performance, thereby overcoming one of the major drawbacks of LCD television technology.
And now it's on sale! The current top of the line local dimming LED-backlit HDTV models from Samsung and Sony are now available on closeout up to 40% off from authorized dealer OneCall. Both models are similar in performance and feature set with 120 Hz processing to reduce motion blur, dynamic contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 (claimed), on-board QAM, NTSC and ATSC tuners, and four HDMI inputs. The Samsung uses White LED lights while the Sony uses Triluminos LEDs (red, green and blue). Each of these TVs is highly rated and represents the best that LCD technology currently has to offer.
