KEF Boxes Up 10 New Rectangular and Square In-Ceiling Ci Speakers

By Rachel Cericola

When it rains, it pours. However, as long as its pouring killer sound, we don't seem to mind all that much. That's the kind of performance that KEF is promising from all 10 of its new Custom Installation (Ci) in-ceiling loudspeakers.

Despite designing all 10 for in-ceiling use, all 10 speakers are different. Besides what's going on inside, six of the new models are square, with the other four taking on a rectangle shape. That pretty much means that you should be able to find something to fit almost any type of installation.

At least your installer should be able to find something. The new Ci models are going to be an exclusive for the custom market.

All models include KEF's magnetically-attached Ultra Thin Bezel (UTB), as well as proprietary grille treatments so you can install it in the bathroom or on a boat. Each one also has a forward mounted woofer and the company's tangerine waveguide, which boasts better dispersion and driver protection.

A total of six new Ci models are available in a square shape. Four include KEF's Uni-Q driver array.

Some of the models will also include KEF's Uni-Q driver array, which puts the tweeter in the acoustic center of the woofer for wider, more evenly distributed sound. The square models with the Uni-Q driver include the 4-inch Ci100QS, the 5.25-inch Ci130QS, the 6.5-inch Ci160QS, and the 8-inch Ci200QS. The 5.25-inch Ci130CS and the 6.5-inch Ci160CS are also available in the square shape, but without the Uni-Q driver array.

If you're looking for something a little different and completely covert, theĀ  Ci100QS is a standout. Designed as a complement to KEF's Ci Soundlight models, this model can almost perfectly match many of today's small Halogen lighting setups.

Two of the rectangle models, the 6.5-inch Ci160QL and the 8-inch Ci200QL, have the Uni-Q driver feature. The other two rectangle speakers include the 6.5-inch Ci160CL and the 8-inch Ci200CL.

"We are excited about the continued investment and development with our Ci products," said David Kroll, KEF's Ci product manager. "The acoustic performance of these models has surpassed our every expectation. The very attractive UTB thin bezel's modern look is in high demand with architects and designers. Additionally, our Uni-Q driver is ideally suited for the square shape and the consumer benefits from the placement-friendly, wide off-axis response and small visible footprint."
