If you thought that Jurassic Park was a visually arresting movie before, wait until you get a load of it on Blu-ray. Universal just officially announced that The Jurassic Park Ultimate Trilogy will roar onto Blu-ray and DVD on October 25, 2011.
The four-disc set will include Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park III, as well as hours of bonus materials. All three have been digitally restored and remastered in high-def, and will include 7.1 channel surround sound.
"From the moment T-Rex first towered over worldwide movie audiences, the Jurassic Park Trilogy has electrified fans with its heart-pounding action and awe-inspiring technological innovations," says Craig Kornblau, president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment. "With this newly remastered and digitally restored edition, we continue the franchise's legacy by delivering to home viewers spectacular picture and sound that keeps the films as fresh and visceral now as they were when audiences first experienced them."
One very special feature is "Return to Jurassic Park," a brand-new six-part documentary that includes all-new interviews with cast members from all three of the Jurassic Park films, as well as the filmmakers, including Steven Spielberg. The six parts are titled: "Dawn of a New Era," "Making Pre-history," "The Next Step in Evolution," "Finding The Lost World," "Something Survived," and "The Third Adventure."
There's also an impressive list of other extras, including making-of featurettes for all three films, trailers and deleted scenes, and shorts to cover the locations, special effects, and the dinosaurs. There are also multiple featurettes on Industrial Light & Magic, and both Steven Spielberg and the late Michael Crichton get their own special shout-out in the special features section.
Based on the book by Michael Crichton, the Jurassic Park franchise has grossed almost $2 billion worldwide. The trilogy has included such famous faces as Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Samuel L. Jackson, Richard Attenborough, Ariana Richards, Joseph Mozzello, Julianne Moore, Vince Vaughn, William H. Macy and Tea Leoni. Of course, there are also plenty of cool creatures, courtesy of Stan Winston, Live Action Dinosaurs; ILM's Dennis Muren, Full Motion Dinosaurs; Phil Tippett, Dinosaur Supervisor; and Michael Lantieri, Special Dinosaur Effects and Special Visual Effects by Industrial Light & Magic.
Besides the Blu-ray box, you can snag a Jurassic Park Limited Edition Blu-ray Trilogy Gift Set, which also includes a custom T-Rex dinosaur statue. Pricing for all three versions of the set, as well as pre-order information, should be available soon.
