Jake Gyllenhaal finally made his mark on the action world this past spring, with the sci-fi thriller Source Code. Missed the action? Summit Home Entertainment wants to give you another chance to see the film, all without having to leave your couch. Not even to go to the mailbox.
The studio just announced (via Collider.com) plans to offer Source Code to VOD (Video on Demand) and EST (Electronic Sell-Through) audiences about two weeks before the film hits Blu-ray. Look for the movie to debut on VOD and EST on Friday, July 8, 2011, with the Blu-ray coming more than two weeks later on Tuesday, July 26.
Typically, movie titles are available on VOD and EST the same day as or somewhat after the disc release. However, Summit is hoping to test the digital waters, to see if consumers would appreciate getting a digital sneak peek at the movie before the physical disc hits store shelves.
"As the way a consumer's consumption of feature films evolves, we are always looking for new ways that meet these demands," said Steve Nickerson, president of Summit Home Entertainment. "While we are optimistic about the consumer appetite for this type of home entertainment release pattern, we are only conducting a test in this case and not making an overall policy shift at this time. Once the results are in we will analyze the data and see what the consumer has to say."
Source Code has Gyllenhaal as a soldier who is trying to solve a train bombing by reliving the day's events over and over. It's sort of a sci-fi version of Groundhog Day, with Michelle Monaghan and Vera Farmiga. The film made its theatrical debut on April 1, 2011. To date, it's taken over $110 million worldwide.
