It's Official: Toshiba Turns Blu, Applies to BDA
By Rachel Cericola
Surprise -- not! Toshiba has
formally announced plans to hop on the Blu-ray bandwagon. Just a few weeks ago,
we reported that the company was thinking about the move.
Speculate no more. Today, the company made a statement that Blu-ray products are currently in the works. They've also applied to become members of the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA).
"In light of recent growth in digital devices supporting the Blu-ray format, combined with market demand from consumers and retailers alike, Toshiba has decided to join the BDA," the statement said.
Expect Toshiba to release Blu-ray players as well as BD-enabled computer products sometime this year. Of course, details, dates, specs, pricing and pretty much everything else is currently under wraps.
The HD-A2 was Toshiba's second-generation entry-level HD DVD player.
Toshiba were champions of the now defunct HD DVD format. After a number of movie studios bailed to become exclusive to Blu-ray, Toshiba folded the format in spring 2008.
