The Show
The gang is back as new questions are asked ("Who Got Dee Pregnant!"), new problems arise ("Mac's Mom Burns Her House Down") and a king is crowned... more or less ("Charlie Kelly: King of the Rats"). And somehow the five main characters of the F/X series It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia survive through another season as they add a new member (who isn't Sweet Dee's baby), get stranded in the woods, fight gay marriage, break up other marriages and even buy a boat. If it all sounds kind of ridiculous and even a little absurd, don't worry: it is, but it's also so much more. But no matter how much trouble this five pack causes, no matter how much mayhem ensues and no matter how many rats Charlie beats with a stick, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia!
The Picture
The gang played a fast one when season five appeared on Blu-ray as it had been shot in standard definition and merely upscaled. This time around however Season Six is actually in full 1080p HD. Because of the location shooting, and the general under-produced nature of the show there is some video softness and a bit of noise at times. However, this is a major step forward from what has come before and the gang has never looked better!
The Sound
The sound is also quite good on the Blu-ray, albeit there isn't really much to it. This is once again a comedy series shot with a single camera, with no laugh track, and is especially dialog heavy. There are a few instances where there is use of discrete audio, and the DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack handles this very well. With the improved video this one really shines.
The Extras
As with previous seasons the Blu-ray release for Season Six is loaded up. There is audio commentary for choice episodes including "Charlie Kelly: King of the Rats," plus "The Gang Gets Stranded in the Woods." There is legal advice from Jack Kelly - not that ANYONE should even think about considering to use this advice. The deleted and extended scenes are good as well, while the blooper reel probably is only funny to the cast and crew. However, the "Dennis and Dee's Podcasts" are quite humorous. Fans can take part in the excellent Sunny Flip Cup Trivia Challenge, but the absolute best bonus - besides the pilot episode of the F/X series Wilfred, which ironically arrives as that show is wrapping its first season - is the gang's indie movie "Lethal Weapon 5," which is presented as an extended cut with optional commentary. Priceless yet oh so tasteless.
Final Thoughts
Season six took a unique and daring turn to accommodate Kaitlin Olson's (Sweet Dee) real life pregnancy and it handled it with no class whatsoever. But if you are offended by a show that has incest jokes, a transsexual bride and continues to be "Seinfeld on crack" then this might not be for you. But if that sounds like a good time, the sun is indeed shining down on another classic season of TV's funniest sitcom.
