Six High-Tech Christmas Gifts for When Money is No Object

By Rachel Cericola

Time is running out to get a great Christmas gift. However, there are probably a few people on your list that are completely impossible to shop for. You know these people; they have everything and/or they like nothing.

Instead of spending hours, days or even weeks seeking out the perfect gift, we have an easy answer. It's also an expensive answer. Yes, you can throw money at the problem and buy all of those fussy friends and family members an incredible pricey piece of electronics.

Trying to balance a holiday budget? Don't bother reading on, unless you like to torture yourself. Some of these items cost as much as a car -- a decent one! That said, some may be well within your budget or something you may want to add to your own personal wishlist.

If you do have the cash to spare, send us some -- please? Then, try snagging yourself and/or your gift recipient one of our favorite Six High-Tech Christmas Gifts for When Money is No Object.

Bang & Olufsen BeoPlay A9 Speaker

One of the least expensive items on our list is also the one that's the most circular. This speaker commands attention, as well as all of your digital music. Because it has support for AirPlay and DLNA technology, users can stream music to the speaker from several portable devices and computers. Those wireless features also mean that there's no need to worry about placement or tons of wires. Other features include two 0.75-inch tweeters and two 3-inch midrange units, which are all driven by separate 80-watt class-D amplifiers. There's also an 8-inch bass unit, which has its own class-D amp. Boasting an output of 480 watts of power, the BeoPlay A9 can also be controlled via the swipe of a hand. [MSRP: $2699]

McIntosh-McAire.jpg

McIntosh McAire Integrated Audio System

Because they can't be outdone by any audio manufacturer on the planet, McIntosh unleashed its very own AirPlay system this year -- and as you can imagine, it's a doozy. The stand-alone speaker system accepts all of your digital media wirelessly via AirPlay, but cranks out something extra special, via two 4-inch woofers, two 2-inch midranges and two 0.75-inch tweeters. It's also got WiFi and Ethernet hookups, as well as a USB port, an RCA input and McIntosh's signature good looks. [MSRP: $3000]

Form1-3Dprinter.jpg

Form 1 Desktop 3D printer

Don't have any super-cool gift ideas? Try printing your own three dimensional tchotchkes, with the Form 1 desktop 3D printer. We're not talking about something you need glasses to see, but actual tangible solid objects.  The "printer" uses stereolithography (SL) technology to pump out layers as thin as .001 inches with details as miniscule as .012 inches. It does that a lot, until it makes a little 3D object that you can hold, display and wrap up with a pretty bow. Of course, it's designed for scientific and R&D prototyping purposes, but anyone with the cash can pre-order a kit on Kickstarter, which includes the full printer, software and an accessories package. And if you want to call it a "replicator" and order up some "Earl Grey, Hot" well who's to stop you?   [MSRP: $3299]

Dream-Octane120.jpg

Dream Arcades Octane 120 Beer Arcade

We really don't want to encourage drinking while driving, but this little innovation will at least keep that kind of behavior parked in the living room. It combines a gaming PC, sit-in controls, and a beer tap. It's also custom-made, so it doesn't come cheap. However, that customization will get you one sweet ride, 12 different driving games, and a built-in HD projector so everyone around you can enjoy the action. To top it (or you) off, the setup can hold two 5-gallon kegs or a half-barrel, which runs to an in-dash beer tap right above your cupholder. That way, you can pour while you play! A second tap in the rear serves spectators and hecklers.  [MSRP: $5995]

Sony-XBR84X900_4.jpg

Sony XBR-84X900 4K LED TV

Several manufacturers released 4K TVs to the masses this year, but in very small quantities. Sony sealed a spot on our list with the company's recent announcement of the companion 4K Ultra HD Video Player. That basically means you can have a flat panel TV with four times the resolution of a full HD 1080p HDTV, and you can watch some actual native 4K content on it, not just upconverted Blu-rays or DVDs. Sony is providing the player pre-loaded with at least ten 4K movies or programs to buyers of their masive 84-inch 4K TV, the XBR-84X900.  Other features on the TV include the 4K X-Reality PRO three-chip picture engine, passive 3D technology (so at least the glasses won't be pricey), dynamic edge lit LED backlighting, built-in WiFi and web streaming services. If you have a little pocket change, you can throw in the Sony Xperia Tablet S, which can be used as a remote via an easy-to-use app. [MSRP: $24,999]

GameThrones-throne.jpg

Game of Thrones Life-sized Throne

Chances are, you'll never get the opportunity to rule the Westeros. However, you can rule your own roost with an iron fist from this Iron Throne replica. Made to look just like the one constructed by Aegon I Targaryen on HBO's Game of Thrones, this massive throne measures over 7 feet in height, 6 feet in depth, and 5.5 feet in width. However, you won't have to actually wrangle the swords of your enemies to get this -- just fork over $30,000. [MSRP: $30,000]
