The Film
Clint Eastwood has been spreading his special brand of bad-assery throughout Hollywood for well over 50 years now. Why all of his films aren't currently available on Blu-ray is anyone's guess. It's especially criminal to not see some of Eastwood's most prominent films in the high-def format. Now, Universal is using a landmark to somewhat recitify that with the High Plains Drifter: 40th Anniversary Edition.
Eastwood's second directorial effort also features one of his most well known roles -- the one only known as The Stranger. Yes, technically he doesn't even have a name. He's just that tough!
He's also sort of questionable. For example, within the first three minutes of the film, The Stranger kills three men and rapes a woman. Now, don't get me started on these few moments of the film. The Stranger's unwilling-turned-willing participant (played by Marianna Hill) probably said it best: "Just what do you consider going too far? Isn't forcible rape in broad daylight a misdemeanor in this town?"
Ah, the '70s.
If you can't get past what's mentioned above, it's going to be a rough 105 minutes. However, you don't really have to get past it. That's because The Stranger isn't really supposed to be a likable character. He's a vengeful character -- and an interesting one to boot. He's the kind of guy you have to keep your eye on. And you'll do just that for the film's entire runtime.
The Picture
This is a 40-year-old western, so you're not going to get the type of image that you'd see on more recent entries in the genre, such as Unforgiven or even Cowboys and Aliens. However, this 1973 classic is coming out on Blu-ray blazing with the words "digitally remastered and fully restored." That promise seems pretty evident throughout this 2.35:1 transfer. It's a good image overall, especially when you considered its age. However, it is a little inconsistent as far as detail. Some of the close-ups on the various characters and outdoor shots of the buildings are just outstanding, though. It's definitely an enjoyable experience.
The Sound
Universal has pumped this classic with a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. Most of the action hangs up front, but the surrounds do get a decent amount of playtime. Most of that is due to the film's soundtrack, but there are plenty of bullets and at least one stick of dynamite helping to put a little punch into this track. It also important to note that all of the dialogue is clear and crisp. When The Stranger speaks, you'll listen and listen well!
The Extras
Final Thoughts
Clint Eastwood's second directorial effort has a few tough moments, but it's way before its time in many ways. The High Plains Drifter: 40th Anniversary Edition is an excellent upgrade, with an enjoyable AV experience. That said, whoever thought it was a good idea to release this "anniversary edition" with nothing more than a measley trailer deserves the wraith of The Stranger himself.
