Green Lantern MIMOBOTS Have Landed: USB Thumb Drives with Style

By Chris Chiarella

Thumb drives--those handy, ubiquitous little USB sticks full of flash memory--have certainly become commoditized in recent years, with capacities increasing and prices dropping. We certainly receive our share in the course of business here at Big Picture Big Sound, full of press releases and product photos, but we've noticed that most of them tend to put practicality ahead of style.

Mimoco has done their part to change all that with their MIMOBOT line of original and licensed USB 2.0 flash drive designs. A timely extension of DC Comics X MIMOBOT Series, which heretofore had included Batman heroes and villains including a limited edition (read: chase) "Vintage" Caped Crusader, the new Green Lantern MIMOBOT collection is arriving just as the Ryan Reynolds feature film is hitting theaters and other tie-ins such as Green Lantern: Emerald Knights is arriving on Blu-ray.

Four characters will be represented in all, starting of course with the Hal Jordan GL (who will be played by Reynolds, although this sculpted plastic likeness is not really movie-specific), and the alien ring-bearers Sinestro (played by Mark Strong), beaky Tomar-Re (Oscar-winner Geoffrey Rush) and bigger-than-life fan-favorite Kilowog (Michael Clarke Duncan).

Plugged into an available USB port on my computer, the little guy immediately identified himself as "HAL_JORDAN." I kid you not, a green light even glows out of his butt to let us know that he is properly connected. (I'm thinking that this dude takes his job way too seriously.)

I promptly transferred and unzipped its contents, "Green Lantern Mimory," a mimoDesk suite of custom icons and avatars as well as wallpapers and screensavers for both Mac and PC, supplied in a range of resolutions to accommodate different screens, including 1024x1024 wallpapers specifically for the iPad, all the way up to full 1920x1080 HD.

A text document of simple instructions is also supplied, as plenty of us have never changed our avatars or wallpapers, and even fewer have changed, say, the appearance of a standard manila folder to something more interesting. (Hal's chiseled mug, anyone?)

Thumb drives are a part of daily life so I won't bore you with a litany of their many varied uses, except to bring it back the home theater: There are still plenty of BD-Live-compatible Blu-ray players out there with an Ethernet jack and a USB port but not the necessary memory built-in to download online content. Seriously, how cool would a Green Lantern look sticking out of your Blu-ray deck?

Mimoco's suggested retail prices for the Green Lantern MIMOBOTS range from $22.95 to $69.95, depending upon capacity: two-to-16 gigabytes, although usable space will be less, with all characters available in all sizes. Each is backed by a one-year limited manufacturer's warranty.
