Get Low Blu-ray Review

By Rachel Cericola

The Film

It's hard to bash a movie that features both Robert Duvall and Bill Murray, as well as the underrated Sissy Spacek. So at least Get Low has that going for it, which is nice.

However, this drama features so much more, including a unique story that just happens to be (loosely) based on a true story. Duvall plays Felix Bush, a 1930s Tennessee hermit. Like all hermits, Felix has a story to tell. However, unlike all hermits, Felix decides to spill the beans by throwing himself a big funeral -- while he's still alive, of course.

Aside from the obvious, Get Low has a few surprises. One of those surprises is that the movie has a few flaws. Of course, those flaws have absolutely nothing to do with casting. Get Low is filled to the brim with excellent performances. The three aforementioned actors should guarantee viewers that they are in for a worthwhile experience. However, Lucas Black (the kid from Sling Blade!) should not be left off the list, since he more than holds his own, while tying in the film's various characters.

The Picture

Sony has created a little Blu gem with Get Low. Despite Duvall's seemingly critter-infested facial hair, this 2.35:1 transfer is gorgeous to look at. The subject matter and time period doesn't really allow for too many bright colors, but there is a lot of beauty here. Right from the beginning, there's plenty of detail in the backwoods surrounding Felix's home. The morning skies and detail on tree bark is phenomenal, to say the least. Facial color and details are also noteworthy, as are the black levels, which give a nice kick to a film whose era keeps a good portion of the film in the dark.

The Sound

Get Low's audio doesn't pack the same punch as the image. Music is actually the main attraction, with Jerry Douglas and Jan A.P. Kaczmarek being a huge soundtrack standout. The film is very dialogue-heavy, although the DTS-HD Master Audio track delivers its share of ambient sounds around Felix's sanctuary, as well as with thunder and rain.

The Extras

All of the extra tidbits here are short and wrapped around clips from the movie. The real highlight here is the commentary, which features both Duvall and Spacek. It's no surprise that Murray didn't participate, and he is missed. It would have been nice if there had been more information on the true story that inspired Get Low. It seems worthy of its own featurette.

Final Thoughts

This movie could be about Felix's donkey -- who actually does appear in a few memorable moments of the movie. Robert Duvall and Bill Murray should be enough to make you snag a copy. However, the fact that it features other notable performances, an interesting story and a more interesting image will make Get Low one of the highlights of any collection.
