The First One's Free, Kid
Seagate has joined forces with Paramount Digital Entertainment to boldly go where no hard disk drive has gone before. Consumers who purchase a new 500GB FreeAgent Go ultra-portable hard drive will be receiving a Digital Copy of the hit movie Star Trek (2009) pre-loaded on the device. It's the same model of hardware as has been previously available; a sleek, excellent storage solution; but U.S. consumers will need to be on the lookout for specially marked packages (see image) to participate in this offer. After purchase, and once the drive has been registered online, a promotional code will be provided to access the necessary license key to unlock the movie.
The goal here is to enable film fans to build and enjoy a digital entertainment library in a convenient new way. And there's a lot more: 20 additional titles from Paramount's extensive catalog have been pre-selected and preloaded onto the drive alongside Trek, an interesting mix of mostly recent movies. The price for these movies will vary, from $9.99 to $14.99.
Movies on the drive include:
These Digital Copies are Windows Media Video files viewable either on a Windows PC (with Microsoft Windows Media Player 10 or Silverlight) or, for more elegant home theater access, via the Seagate FreeAgent Theater+ HD Media Player (following a free firmware upgrade this month). File size ranges from two-and-a-half to three gigabytes per movie, meaning that the entire pre-loaded library will occupy about 50GB total on the new drive. The movies are roughly DVD quality, as the DRM does not presently support HD-quality files.
The manufacturer's suggested retail price of the 500GB FreeAgent Go hard disk drive is $139.99, but as a promotional offer for the first month, it will be available on the Seagate website at the special price of only $99.99. The offer will go live at 8:00 AM on Monday, April 12th.
